The owner of Unomatudo, Manabu Hata took over his family business, a traditional lacquerware artisan store that has been open since 1930, in 1999. He restructured the company and positioned his products for more modern tastes. In 2011, he had the brilliant idea to produce the Soji collection in collaboration with design studio Mute. He deconstructed the traditional way of making lacquerware and decided not to cover the wood with dark lacquer (Urushi), instead exhibiting the natural beauty of wood grains by coating it with transparent urethane.
